There was such violence in my voice that Marty looked at me like I was crazy.

I took a deep breath. “I’m just angry and scared,” I said. “This poor kid was trying to get to an interview and is running late, so he was driving irresponsibly. He made a mistake.”

Years later, I ended up with a manager who worked at the office where the kid was going for an interview. I would always look for him. I honestly hope he got the job.

Michael Levin and I would meet again, years after our first encounter. In December 2017, I was back at the Barker airplane hangar in Santa Monica, this time for the Critics’ Choice Awards. This Is Us was up for two awards, and the whole cast was there all dressed up. I was so excited. We were on the red carpet when I suddenly heard someone yell my name. It was Michael!

“What are you here for?” I asked. I was thrilled to see him again.

“I’m producing the awards,” he said. “Chrissy. Do you believe all this? You were at CVS.”

“I know!”

Believe me, I know. I was in a CVS parking lot at midnight, praying my car would start so I could get home and sleep before getting up at 7 a.m. to start my other workday. You just never know when it’s going to click for you. If you’re having hard times right now, whatever shimmy trick you have to do to keep going, take a mental picture. I want you to look back on this part of your life and thank yourself for not giving up.
